As Valentine's Day creeps close - and we celebrate Cupid having struck or wonder when he will - our minds turn to matters of the heart.
But it's not just our romantic fortunes that need looking after - we need to look after our physical heart, too, as well as our emotional wellbeing.
So this Valentine's give yourself the gift of a healthy heart and mind by following some of our tips!
There is a lot you can do to look after your emotional wellbeing:
- Make sure that you leave school early one night a week and do something that is just for you - develop a passion for something non-school/college related, play a sport or even learn a new musical instrument. Being in the position of learner and doing something physical or that uses a different part of your brain can be extremely therapeutic.
- Draw a line between work and home. If you do need to bring work home, make sure you have a designated working area that you can close the door on.
- If you are having difficulty with your relationship with your partner try to discuss any concerns, no matter how small - or perhaps particularly when they are small to prevent them becoming major issues.
- Doing exercise can be a fantastic way to ease stress and clear your head.
And to keep you physical heart healthily:
- Taking regular exercise is an important part of keeping healthy. You don't have to spend hours in the gym just change some of your regular routine so cycle to school rather than drive or take the lift rather than the stairs. Those who live inactive lives are twice as likely to suffer from heart disease.
- Make sure you have a healthy balanced diet. Eat lots of fruit, vegetables and fish. Cut down on saturated fats, salt and sugar. Drink plenty of water. And never skip breakfast.
